Sports play a pivotal role in many people’s lives, whether it be through them playing in the game or watching it from the sidelines. Sports gain a higher meaning for many and are a way in which people can express themselves and do what they love. There is no doubt that the crucial role that they play in society. Personally, sports have always played an important role in my life as I had played a variety of sports from the age of three. While I no longer play a sport my love for them is still there and I often find watching them as an escape from whatever challenges may be going on in my life.
Another area in which I have found an escape and huge passion in my life is nonprofits and the work that they do. After volunteering with one in high school I fell in love with them and saw all the steps that it takes to run them. It’s a tiring job because they are extremely underpaying jobs that require a lot of tireless dedication. However, they can recognize areas in which people in society need help and they devote their time to improving that for generations to come. They don’t do it to make money or for fame, they do it to help and assist in whatever way they can. When I got to college I knew that is an area that I wanted to further explore and so I decided to minor in nonprofit administration.
As I have continued to learn more about nonprofits as well as grow my love for sports I found a unique intersection between both. With sports, I had a passion for the game and what it can do for people by providing them with a sense of identity. With nonprofits, they recognize that identity and the shortcomings that might come with it and use their organization to further grow the sport while effecting change in their community. Seeing both passions of mine interwoven and working alongside one another truly was mind-blowing and inspiring to me.
Throughout this blog, I aim to highlight nonprofits that exemplify this connection and highlight them to further do my part in growing both. I recognize the importance that nonprofits play in allowing everyone access to sports as well as the part that they play in growing the games in general. While to some sports might seem like a mundane and simple concept to me as well as many others they are vital parts of our lives.
The biggest challenge that nonprofits have is gaining enough visibility and without it its is merely impossibly to find both volunteers and donors, so in this blog I will not only will I be trying to help the public by highlighting sports nonprofits that they can participate in. I hope to also draw an eye to athletes that are going above and beyond the sports that they play by participating or running a nonprofit. Pleas continue to follow along as I explore the world of sports nonprofits and show you the ins and outs of what it takes to run them and ways in which you can get involved.
